Understanding The DeVos Family Philanthropy

The conservative DeVos Family is one of the leading families in terms of philanthropic activities. The family’s donations are extensive. Richard DeVos Sr successfully created a fortune through direct marketing. In 1959, he co-founded Amway. The firm’s sales model has been effective, thus making DeVos one of the richest people in the United States. With the vast wealth, I am not surprised that he is a significant contributor to charity activities. Together with his wife, Helen, they run the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation based in Michigan. Richard and his wife along with their children have made significant contributions in many areas, especially in education reform. The DeVos Family runs three different charities and in my view, it is not difficult to note that religious charities are the preferred kind of grantee for their foundations. The family donates to the youth groups, Christian schools, faith based charities and a number of parochial schools.

DeVos Sr’s foundation has been a strong supporter of conservative policy organizations that consist of grantees like Freedomworks, the Heritage Foundation and AEI. Additionally, he puts up his money into conservative as well as republican political campaigns. Together with his wife Helena, they jointly made a $50 million payment to kick-start a new children’s hospital within Grand Rapids called the Helena DeVos Children’s Hospital. The couple has three children namely; Dick, Dan, and Doug. Among the three sons, Dick DeVos appears to be the most active philanthropist. Just like his father, he is active in conservative politics. Together with his wife, Betsy DeVos, they run a charity called the Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation, which they established in 1989. Among the areas that the foundation supports include school choice, the arts, neighborhood revitalization and community health. The foundation has awarded grants to Potter’s House and West Michigan Aviation Academy. This information was originally published on Inside Philanthropy.
