Congratulations!

You have decided to venture into the amazing world of flash photography. At the beginning it may seem a little overwhelming, but once you get the hang of it, the possibilities are endless. I'm going to try to explain flash photography as simple as I can. But if there is something that you don't understand completely, do not hesitate to ask a question by leaving it in the comments section or using the contact form.

Let's begin!

There are a total of 5 variables that will determine your desired exposure when it comes to flash photography. One of the hardest things for me to understand about flash photography was that with flash photography you are exposing for two different types of light in each photograph. This is what can get complicated about flash photography, but what also opens all these creative possibilities. In natural light photography all you have to expose for is the available light. All of your settings, your aperture, your shutter speed, your iso will control your ambient light equally and that's all you have to worry about. In flash photography you have to expose for two different lights, the ambient light exposure and the flash exposure. There are settings that only control your ambient light exposure and others only for your flash exposure. There are also settings that control both exposures. It sounds complicated but it really isn't. So keep reading.

Everything you need to expose correctly is controled by five settings. They are Shutter Speed, Aperture, ISO, Flash Power and the Inverse Square Law. Each of these settings work together to give you complete control of your image. It's extremely important that you know how they all to work to get the most out of flash photography. Not all photography situations are created equal and that's the beauty of having these five settings. There will be times when the adjustment of one setting will not work for your situation, but you have the other settings that will compensate. After you read through all the variables, we put it all together using a method I came up with called the GENIUS SQUARED!

It's a beautiful journey with amazing results, so don't give up!
